A Little Texas History

Texas has a long history of fighting to keep slavery alive and well - even the breakup with Mexico was over the enslavement of people - and not for the right reasons. Mexico began to restrict slavery in the 18020s and finally moved to abolish the practice in 1829.

White Texans didn’t like that. They continued enslaving people and eventually declared independence in 1836. (History books will tell you it was about cultural identity with the United States, but, like the Civil War, it was all about slavery.

Unfortunately, it seems the state I grew up in is taking a step back. In late June, when much of the state began seeing 120+ temps, the governor signed a bill that actually BANS cities from requiring water breaks for workers.

WTF, Texas?
